Florida’s West Coast is the Best Coast!

Florida’s West Coast is the Best Coast

This book should have plenty of useful insights for anyone planning a beach wedding, but we are going to focus on the West Coast of Florida, where our company, Gulf Beach WeddingsÒ operates.

Obviously, I know Florida’s left side, stretching from the Panhandle in the north to Sarasota in the south, because that is where we operate. But the real reason we are located on the Gulf Coast of Florida has to do with the award-winning beaches in every direction.

Florida’s West Coast is quite possibly the best place on planet Earth to hold a beach wedding.

Bold statement? Not really, once you consider a few factors that make Florida’s West Coast so unique. No hard feeling East Coasters, you are great too, but…

 Sunsets:

If you want to see the sunset over the water without going to California or Hawaii, come to Florida’s West Coast. Many couples schedule the ceremony within the sunset time frame affording beautiful wedding day photographs. Even if you have a mid-day ceremony, the perfect way to wrap up your special day is with a cocktail overlooking the water and the setting sun.

Sand:

Here’s some geology trivia for you: Quartz rocks in the Appalachian Mountains have eroded over the millennia, tumbling into streams and rivers. Where does that quartz end up, as it gets transported south?

The Gulf Coast, where it has been transformed into some of the world’s best sand. Many of the beaches where we conduct ceremonies have this fine, pure, white sand.

This white, fluffy sand is legendary, especially around the Tampa Bay region.

It doesn’t get nearly as hot as darker sand, and photographers love the striking contrast that it provides for your ceremony.  It is often referred to as ‘sugar sand.’

Beaches on the East Coast of the state typically have tan or brown sand that is coarser underfoot.

Water:

The water in the Gulf Coast of Florida is known for its turquoise, Caribbean-like hue. Gulf Coast shores typically have shallow waters with sandbars. This allows the sunlight to reflect off the afore-mentioned white quartz sand, illuminating the surrounding waters.  Further, up in the Panhandle, this is often referred to as the ‘Emerald Coast’ of Florida…yes, it’s in the name!

The Atlantic Ocean has more of a brownish hue due to the deeper water just a short distance from shore (thus having a much darker color). Enough said.

Waves (or lack thereof):

The Gulf Coast is mostly wave-free. This may be a disappointment for your surfer best man, but it makes for an ideal wedding spot.

You don’t have to worry about guests being able to hear over the sound of waves crashing ashore, and your ceremony is not likely to be interrupted by boogie boarders or surfers.

The small waves lapping in the background are just enough to cover the footsteps where you walked. Unless it is a once-in-a-decade event, you are not likely to see any eight-foot swells crashing on the beach and upending the Bamboo Arch.

The People:

No offense to our friends on the Atlantic side of the state, but Florida’s West Coast has a decidedly laid-back vibe. People flock to our beaches to escape the hustle and bustle of the East Coast, and they are rewarded with a far more relaxing atmosphere than you might experience in Miami or Fort Lauderdale.

There is some truth to the stereotype that Florida’s West Coast is filled with friendly Midwesterners, who got here via I-75. The florists, caterers, venue managers and photographers that we work with also have that Midwestern sensibility.

Pricing:

The costs are generally less expensive on the Gulf Coast.

From Pensacola Beach to Siesta Key you’ll find deals on housing, restaurants and vendors that are tough to match on the other side of the peninsula.

Why?

As Florida’s population exploded over the past century, much of the growth and wealth was concentrated on the East Coast, stretching from Miami to Jacksonville. That doesn’t mean the West Coast of Florida is some backwater no-man’s land, but the cost of living is lower, and you can hold a beach wedding here for less.

This is expected to change as the population increases. The COVID-19 pandemic hastened the big migration south to Florida and the West Coast in particular because of the relatively lower positive cases compared to the eastern portion of the state.

But even as more and more people come to our Gulf Shores to say, “I do,” our prices remain below what you will see on the other side of the state.

Convinced that the west side is the best side yet? If so…buckle up. Let’s get started by talking about one of the most important issues that can also be one of the most stressful for couples who try to ignore it…the cost of saying “I do.”

Is a Florida Beach Wedding for me?

Is a Florida Beach Wedding for Me?

Here’s the thing: Beach weddings are not for everyone. Before you set your sights on a beach wedding, ask yourself some questions:

  • If you want to have hundreds of guests, dreamed of walking down the aisle in six-inch heels and you just prefer rigid formality over a good time, a beach wedding may not be for you.
  • If you have a mother, grandmother, aunt or big sister who is going to run the show and control every element, then a beach wedding may not be for you.
  • If your idea of a good time doesn’t include lounging in the sun, enjoying the country’s best beaches and reuniting with family and friends over drinks at the beach bar, a beach wedding may not be for you.
  • If you have no interest in water sports, outdoor activities, late nights, long talks, good friends and 60–75-degree weather in January, then a beach wedding may not be for you.
  • If you are not interested in sand between your toes and own at least one pair of sunglasses, then a beach wedding may not be for you.

In short, if you aren’t that into having fun, then a beach wedding may not be for you.

And we get it. The idea of a beach wedding can cause a nervous bride or groom-to-be to begin thinking through all the “what-if” worst case scenarios.

What if it rains? What if it is 100 degrees? What if an errant volleyball hits the officiant in the head in the middle of your “I do’s?”

But everything good in life – marriage included – requires a little bit of compromise.

A beach wedding, especially on the Gulf Coast of Florida, taps into some of nature’s most stunningly beautiful backdrops. Sure, you could manipulate every element of your special day and ensure you have the exact lighting you want, but why not let the sun setting into the Gulf of Mexico be your lighting backdrop.

You could agonize over colors and matching motifs, or you could let the turquoise Gulf waters and white sand set your theme.

And you could try to micromanage the perfect event so everyone has the most fun possible, or you could just trust that, when family and friends gather in Florida to celebrate the wedding of someone they love, good times are a guarantee.

Still not sure if a beach wedding is for you? See all that apply:

  • You rarely (if ever) are accused of being overly formal.
  • You don’t take life too seriously and get a thrill out of seeing the people around you let loose and have fun.
  • You love turquoise water, dramatic sunsets, alabaster-white sand, and natural beauty over anything man made.
  • You don’t want to begin marriage with nothing in your bank account or (even worse) in debt. Use the savings to put a down payment on a new house.

By now, you are probably picking up our vibe. A beach wedding involves a certain amount of letting go, and for some couples that is not easy.

But letting go doesn’t mean just rolling the dice and hoping everything turns out OK. This book can be your roadmap through that process of “letting go.”

And if this book inspires you to hire the expert wedding consultant at Gulf Beach WeddingsÒ, we are here to ensure everything will go as smoothly as possible…again, cue the jumping dolphins!

10 Tips for Great Photos from a Wedding Photographer

By the time you walk down the aisle, you have spent countless hours planning your perfect day. You’ve debated all the details, hemmed and hawed over flowers and dresses and whittled down a guest list to include the people most important to you.  These decisions will all be immortalized in the photos of you and your loved one.

After all that time planning, you want to make sure your pictures reflect just how special the day is. Unfortunately, nerves can take over, brides hide behind bouquets, grinning uncles sneak into first kiss pictures, flower girls pick their noses…we’ve seen it all.

Here are ten tips from our veteran wedding photographers on how you can help ensure your wedding pictures are as beautiful as the day is.

  1. Let’s see that face: Hey brides, when walking down the aisle, keep your bouquet in front of your belly button. Many brides get nervous and don’t notice their bouquet rising. It can make it look like you are trying to hide behind it. Also, if someone is walking you down the aisle, make sure you pause for a few moments to look at each other and smile.
  2. Stand up straight: During the ceremony be mindful of your posture. Keep your chin up and a smile on your face. Even if you are nervous, keep smiling so it doesn’t show in your photos.
  3. Don’t hold back those emotions. The goal of the photographer is to get emotion-filled candids of your special day. Concentrate on the person that you are marrying and let everything else fall away. A good photographer will be on the lookout for those little candid moments that will take your breath away for years to come. The more outgoing or emotional you are, the better the photos will be. If you are reserved and don’t show emotions, it will reflect in your photos.
  4. Let’s be seated. Having a chair for each person gives the photographer the best line of sight in all directions. If there are multiple people standing, they can be a distraction to the photographer getting you that incredible shot.
  5. Don’t stifle creativity. It’s fine to have a list of shots that you would like to get on camera, but remember, your photographers are the professionals. They are the ones that have been doing this for years and have a system of getting great photos for you. Talk through their process beforehand to ensure you two are on the same page. If you want them to stick strictly to your requests, you may be limiting their creativity and missing out on great shots you hadn’t thought of. A good photographer will always give you the option to fulfill requests after he/she has everything they need to round out your day photographically.
  6. Get outta the way Father Joe! Make sure the officiate steps out of the kiss photo. Your first kiss is epic at the end of your ceremony, and one of the most amazing photos of your day. Please make sure your officiate knows to get out of the way quickly after you have been pronounced. Then your photographer can get a great shot of this memorable moment without someone standing right behind or in the middle of you.
  7. Herd those cats. Assembling a hodgepodge of different family members and friends for group shots can be one of the most challenging parts of the day. Have a plan and communicate that clearly to everyone involved. If family members need to stick around for pictures after the ceremony, let them know ahead of time, or else you will waste 10 minutes crowbarring Uncle Roger away from the cocktail bar.  A good photographer must be polite but also firm to get the photos they need, so trust us. If we get a little “firm” it is because we are there to capture your big day.
  8. Trust the pro. The photographer you hired to shoot your wedding knows how, when and where to get the best shots. Although most of your guests will likely have a camera on their phone, the best pics will come from the pro. Amateurs will take multiple photos while a professional photographer will know where the best shots are, when to get them, and what light they need to achieve the desired photo. If your guests are all holding up their cell phones/ipads/selfie sticks then these are likely to be a distraction in your photos.
  9. Trust the pro (part two). Your photographer also brings with him or her the high-tech camera equipment to get the best shot. You may have guests with fancy cameras, but again  you might have a great set of pots and pans at home… but does that mean everyone can cook? Your professionals know what they are doing… trust them.
  10. This is the most important one RELAX AND HAVE A GREAT TIME. Life is short, and this is a milestone moment. This is one of the most special days of your life. You and your guests should be enjoying the day stress free. Let the people you paid worry about everything else. This is your day.

Keep these ten tips in mind, and your photos will be a source of laughter, joy, smiles and cherished memories for years to come.

Gulf Beach Wedding Ratings System

Brides and grooms from across the country are flocking to our beaches to say their vows.

As you know, TripAdvisor ranked Sarasota’s Siesta Key the best beach in the country for 2017, and St. Pete Beach and Clearwater Beach followed close behind at number 4 and 5. There are more top-ranked beaches in the Tampa region than in all of California and Hawaii combined.

But with so many beaches in Pinellas, Hillsborough and Manatee counties, a couple planning a wedding in our region can easily be overwhelmed by the options. The question ‘What beaches are ideal for a wedding?’ is not an easy one to answer. It all depends on what is most important to the couple.

The Gulf Beach Wedding Beach Rating System simplifies the process. https://gulfbeachweddings.com/beach-ratings/

We have compiled vital logistical information for more than 30 area beaches into one chart so couples can see ideal wedding size, permit fees, sand ratings, privacy, costs for parking, reception locations and numbers of boardwalks for each beach.

Each couple is different. To some, all they want is the legendary white sand squishing through their toes as they say ‘I do,’ and for them, we would recommend Holmes Beach on Anna Maria Island. For a couple who wants privacy, Upham Beach at St. Pete Beach North is the ideal spot. And a couple who wants to work with a hotel in the planning, the Doubletree location at Redington Beach may be perfect.

But there is no way a bride-to-be could suss out all the information in just a few hours of online research and phone calls. That is why we have compiled all the vital statistics of area beaches into one chart.

Just because our region has some of the world’s best beaches does not mean each spot is perfect for a wedding. And just because a Tampa area beach is not on TripAdvisor’s top ten does not mean it is not a perfect spot to say ‘I do.’

The Gulf Beach Wedding Beach Rating system highlights the strengths of each site and can help beaches with less-prevalent web presences get their name out there as brides and grooms pick their spots.

Destination weddings are growing in popularity — more than 20 percent of couples who got married in 2015 chose to have a destination wedding, according to The Knot’s annual survey of over 18,000 brides. The Tampa tourism industry stands ready to host brides and grooms, their families, their friends, their pets – whoever wants to come, we’ll take them!
