Alabama Marriage License Requirements

Bride and Groom must obtain an Alabama Marriage License in the State of Alabama. The fee is paid directly to the Probate Judge: The cost is determined by County ($40-104) and is currently $70 in Baldwin County, AL (as of 10/1/17).  The Alabama Marriage License is valid for 30 days after issuance, therefore the Ceremony must be done within this time frame.

Alabama Resident:

• Bride and Groom must go to Probate Judge in State of Alabama to obtain your marriage license.
• You must be 18 years of age to legally wed, you may be 16 years of age with parental consent in writing.
• Bride and Groom must have a valid photo identification such as a driver’s license, state identification card, government or military identification card, or a passport.
• A social security number is required to obtain a marriage license.
• If either party was previously married and divorced, the date of the divorce will be required. If the date of the divorce was within the thirty days prior to the new application for a marriage license, a certified copy of the recorded final order will be required.
• There is no waiting period for Alabama Residents, except there is a 60 day waiting period after your divorce is final.

Out of State Residents / US Citizens:

• You may also obtain your Alabama Marriage License at any Probate Judge.
• Bride and Groom must have valid photo identification such as a driver’s license, state identification card, government or military identification card, or a passport.
• There is no waiting period for out of state residents.
• If either party was previously married and divorced, the date of the divorce will be required. If the date of the divorce was within the thirty days prior to the new application for a marriage license, a certified copy of the recorded final order will be required.

International Residents:

• You may also obtain your Alabama Marriage License at any Probate Judge in the State of Alabama.
• Bride and Groom must have a valid photo passport.
• If either party is from a foreign country and not a U.S. citizen, alien registration documentation, or other proof which contains an alien registration number is acceptable to obtain a marriage license.
• If either party was previously married and divorced, the date of the divorce will be required. If the date of the divorce was within the thirty days prior to the new application for a marriage license, a certified copy of the recorded final order will be required.
• There is no waiting period for international residents.
• Most international counties require the bride and groom register the license at the local registrar office or government agency, please check with your embassy / consulate or appropriate office.
