Beach Wedding Attire

Pulling off your dream beach wedding is no easy feat, especially when it comes to what to wear. If you’re planning to have your wedding ceremony on a beach, there are a few things you should consider.

Think light: Consider fabrics that are breathable and will keep you cool such as chiffon, silk, cotton, and charmeuse. Avoid lace trims because they can pick up sand and debris from the beach, which is difficult to shake out afterwards. Instead, choose a lightweight fabric that will flow in the breeze.

Shape up: Pick a dress with a shape that flows easily in the wind and will keep you cool, for instance, an open back or strapless dress that allows for fluid movement. Avoid gowns with heavy or long trains because sand, flowers, and any debris will get stuck and you’ll carve a wake in the sand as you’re walking down the aisle.

Ditch the stilettos: Have you ever tried to walk in the sand while wearing heels? I don’t recommend it. Opt for flats, sandals, or go barefoot instead! There are plenty of glamorous options for footwear, even when you take heels out of the equation. You can even dress up your feet if you choose to go barefoot; there are thousands of beautiful barefoot sandals. If, however, you must add a little height, opt for wedges or espadrilles so you don’t get caught in the sand. Just remember to have your dress hemmed accordingly!

Up or down? Hair can be tricky for a beach wedding due to weather. A casual updo will keep the hair out of your face while keeping you looking polished all night. If you prefer your hair down, try to at least pin the front part of it back so that your hair doesn’t get caught in your teeth or lip gloss throughout the ceremony.

Get rid of the veil: Veils and wind do not mix well together, leaving you and your photographer struggling throughout the ceremony. Opt instead for securely placed flowers or headbands.

For the men: Although you may have always envisioned standing at the alter with your soon to be husband dressed in a black tux, this is hardly an outfit for a tropical climate. Lightweight cotton or linen pants or suits are better suited for the occasion, and will keep your groom cool throughout the ceremony.
